Programme Note
Krazny, for solo trombone and pre-recorded electronics was completed in 2001, originally using a CD for any live performance accompaniment. The work’s intention is to create interaction between the acoustic trombone and the electronic accompaniment, thus ensuring a strong relationship, as opposed to an abstract one between the two components.
The title, Krazny, is the Russian word for “Red” and the work represents the communist oppression over many decades of Russia and other countries. The sounds contained on the pre-recorded accompaniment are recorded acoustic sounds and spoken key words such as “torture” that have been recorded and then processed by time-code expansion, ring-modulation, convolution and spectral mutation.
The first section of this work is harsh and contains the most evident interaction between the accompaniment and trombone. The material in the acoustic trombone is based largely on quartertonal melodic material and faster passages, while the material in the accompaniment is based predominantly on violent percussive sounds. The second section in contrast, is more passive, with less interaction between the two components. The trombone’s melodic material still has a heavy emphasis on quartertones, only with the added addition of long and gradual glissandi that expose the microtonal nature of the instrument. This is complemented by long resonant sostenuto-like sounds in the accompaniment.
